Madan Rao


Madanmohan Rao is a journalist, author, blogger and consultant in media and management based in Bangalore, India. He was the world music editor at Rave magazine, where he reviewed concerts, albums and music genres for seven years. Madan was also a radio jockey for world music at WorldSpace Satellite Radio, where he produced a weekly two-hour programme on world music. He is currently global correspondent for World Music Central and Jazzuality.
He was formerly an RJ for world music at WMUA FM 91.1 in Amherst, Massachusetts, USA. Madan is also music editor for IndiaSe (“From India”) magazine published from Singapore. He is the founder of the “World of Proverbs” project and book series which includes the book “Indian Proverbs and Quotations.”

Madan has covered a range of international music festivals including WOMAD in Singapore, JakJazz and JavaJazz in Jakarta, Fireflies and Guitar Gurus in Bangalore, PopKomm in Berlin, WOMEX in Sevilla, ReggaeFestivalen in Sweden, Day of Peace and Rotterdam International Jazz Festival in Holland, Miri Jazz Festival in Malaysia, Bali Spirit Festival in Indonesia, Penang World Music Festival and Sarawak Rainforest World Music Festival in Malaysia. He has published reviews of over 500 albums of world music, featuring dozens of artistes, genres and countries.

Madan is also a frequent speaker on the international conference circuit, and has given talks and lectures in over 75 countries around the world. He was previously research director at the Asian Media Information and Communication centre (AMIC) in Singapore, where he edited publications, conducted research and helped organise the annual AMIC media summits.
He was the communications director at the United Nations Inter Press Service bureau in New York, and vice president at IndiaWorld Communications in Bombay. He graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology at Bombay and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, with an M.S. in computer science and a Ph.D. in communications.

Madan grew up in Poona, went to college in Bombay, and grad school in the US. He has been based in Bangalore for the last 12 years. His hobbies include travel, hiking, swimming and beer appreciation.
